The coverage reports everything from how the police handled the situation, whether they responded in timely manner, whether they’d come running some other politicians should have returned from holiday. And how local volunteers all pitched in to help with the cleanup operation. I think the police are actually in a difficult situation during the riots. They weren’t sufficient in the streets to prevent the large telelooting that was going on. There is still operating under the cloud of death of Ian Tomlinson 2009 G 20 summit protests. Though initially his death had been put down to natural causes, a video later showed when police officer beating him with a bat. This is later showed to the excessive four use of force and a charge of unlawful killing has been made against that police man. For the D20 protest was significantly more peaceful then recent riots going on, still puts the police in a difficult situation to make judgment between what’s appropriate level of force to disband the large group of people. This is what perhaps excessive force is and allegedly or potentially caused the death of Ian Tomlinson during 2009. But I think one of the most interesting areas that have been reported are is this social media and its use during the riots to both respond in positive and negative way I think it highlighted that it is essential to have ways of responding to social media but also instantaneous nature of it. Riots are apparently organized groups of teenagers using blackberry messengers to communicate with each other a statistic shows out of 30% teenagers now have blackberry messengers and able to communicate with large numbers of people who they are connected to groups. This made it difficult for the police to respond and monitor the activity. Apparently blackberry messenger cannot be traced by the police who were monitoring sites such as Twitter and Facebook. But I think the important thing to remember is that these kinds of tools can have a very positive effect during an incident as well if they are used in a correct way. For example, blackberry messenger was the only form of communication following both Chile and Japan earthquake. And it was several days before the phones were restored but people were able to communicate by blackberry. Continue reading:
